Elephants Free Crochet Pattern

Hello amigurumi lovers and beautiful visitors, I wanted to share the free amigurumi patterns for you here. In my article I will share 1 pattern and how to make it for you. At the end of my article, I will share amigurumi patterns that can generate ideas for you.

Elephants In Love

All patterns are written in US terms using Craft Yarn Council abbreviations.

Intermediate pattern.  You need to have knowledge of single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), slip stitch (sl st), and both increases and decreases. Experience with seamless part attachment is helpful, but not required.

Gauge

Gauge is not important for amigurumi. Make sure to use the same hook throughout for correct proportions.

Measurements

9 inches tall x 6 inches long

Supplies

  • Furls Odyssey G+ (4.5mm) hook
  • 1 skein Red Heart Super Saver 100% acrylic worsted weight yarn, 364 yds, any one color. Samples are made in Light Grey and Real Teal.
  • 2-15mm colored safety eyes
  • Yarn Needle
  • Straight Pins
  • Stitch marker or stitch saver (safety pins work as well)

Pattern Stitches

Single Crochet Join – Sc join: Put slip knot over hook, insert hook through st, yo, pull though stitch, yo, pull through both loops on hook. Sc created.

Pattern Notes

Work in continuous rounds.  Do not join rounds with slip stitch.

Ch-3 at beginning of Rows count as dc.

Assemble in order as directed for best positioning results.

Instructions

Body

Ch 4.

Sc in second ch from hook, 2 sc. Turn.

Rnd 1: Inc in next 3 sc, do not turn, working on the bottom of the starting chain, Inc in 3 chains. (12)

Rnd 2: [Sc, inc] 6 t imes. (18)

Rnd 3: [2 sc, inc] 6 times. (24)

Rnd 4: [3 sc, inc] 6 times. (30)

Rnd 5: [4 sc, inc] 6 times. (36)

Rnd 6: [5 sc, inc] 6 times. (42)

Rnd 7: [6 sc, inc] 6 times. (48)

Rnd 8: [7 sc, inc] 6 times. (54)

Rnd 9-16: Sc evenly around.

Rnd 17: Ch 6, skip 12, 2 sc, ch 6, skip 12, sc, ch 6, skip 12, 2 sc, ch 6, skip 12, sc. Four leg holes created. (24 chs, 6 sc remaining)

Rnd 18: Begin closing belly. Working in chs and scs between leg holes, [3 sc, dec] 6 times. (24)

Rnd 19: [2 sc, dec] 6 times. (18)

Begin stuffing.

Rnd 20: [sc, dec] 6 times. (12)

Rnd 21: Dec 6 times. (6)

Bind off leaving long tail for sewing. Thread yarn through remaining 6 sts and pull tight to close.

Finish stuffing body through leg holes.

Legs

Rnd 1: Sc join in any stitch around leg hole. Working clockwise, Sc in each sc and ch around leg hole. (18)

Rnd 2-6: Sc evenly around. (18)

Rnd 7: BLO, [sc, dec] 6 times. (12)

Stuff leg firmly.

Rnd 8: Both loops, 6 dec. (6)

Bind off leaving long tail for sewing. Thread yarn through remaining 6 sts and pull tight to close.

Repeat on other 3 legs.

Head

Ch 2.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in second ch from hook. (6)

Rnd 2: Inc in each st around. (12)

Rnd 3: [Sc, inc] 6 times. (18)

Rnd 4: [2 sc, inc] 6 times. (24)

Rnd 5: [3 sc, inc] 6 times. (30)

Rnd 6: Skip 12, 18 sc. Leave skipped sts unworked for trunk.

Rnd 7-8: (Begin head) Sc evenly around. (18)

 Rnd 9: [2 sc, inc] 6 times. (24)

Rnd 10: [3 sc, inc] 6 times. (30)

Rnd 11: [4 sc, inc] 6 times. (36)

Rnd 12-17: Sc evenly around. (36)

Insert safety eyes between Rounds 11 and 12, 9 sts apart, centered on either side of the trunk opening.

Rnd 18: [4 sc, dec] 6 times. (30)

Rnd 19: [3 sc, dec] 6 times. (24)

Rnd 20: [2 sc, dec] 6 times. (18)

Stuff firmly to trunk hole.

Rnd 21: [sc, dec] 6 times. (12)

Rnd 22: Dec 6 times. (6)

Bind of leaving long tail for sewing. Thread yarn through front loops of remaining 6 sts and pull tight to close.

Trunk

Rnd 1: Sc join  in 7th stitch from face, working clockwise around trunk hole, sc evenly around. (12)

Rnd 2: Sc evenly around.

Rnd 3: 5 sc, dec, 5 sc. (11)

Rnd 4: Sc evenly around.

Stuff as you go from here on.

Rnd 5: 5 sc, dec, 4 sc. (10)

Rnd 6: Sc evenly around.

Rnd 7: 5 sc, dec, 3 sc. (9)

Rnd 8: 5 sc, dec, 2 sc. (8)

Rnd 9: 5 sc, dec, sc. (7)

Rnd 10: 5 sc, dec. (6)

Rnd 11-12: Sc evenly around.

Rnd 13-15: Dec, 2 sc, inc, sc. (6)

Rnd 16: Sc evenly around. (6)

Rnd 17: 3 sc, inc, 2 sc. (7)

Rnd 18: Sc evenly around. (7)

Bind off leaving long tail for sewing. Thread yarn through back loops of remaining 7 sts and pull tight to close. Weave in ends.

Ears

(Make 2)

Ch 4.

Row 1: 5 dc in 4th ch from hook. Turn. (6)

Row 2: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc inc in next 5 sts. Turn. (12)

Row 3: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc, [dc inc, dc] 5 times. Turn. (18)

Row 4: Ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc, [dc inc, 2 dc] 5 times. (24)

Sl st in starting ch of ear to curve.

Bind off, leaving long tail for sewing.

Using tail, sew folded part of ear on long edge.

Sew to head along Row 17 (last row worked evenly around). Each ear is sew along 12 stitches, 3 stitches apart at the top. 

Head

Mark a 6 st x 6 st square on body between Rounds 2 and 7, centered between legs on either end of body. Be sure to attach head between legs with only one sc between them.

Position head with center point of head centered on Round 2. Mark head where it touches the pins.

Tail

Ch 5.  Bind off. Pull both ends tight. Use one end to sew the tail to Round 5. Weave in ends. Cut other end ¾ inch long and fray yarn.
