Elephant Free Crochet Pattern

YARN: Light (3) in Gray and Beige; Classic Cotton Thread in Black

MATERIALS: 3.5 mm Hook; Poly Filling; Yarn Needle; Two 9 mm Black Plastic Safety Eyes

DIMENSION: 7” x 5”

ABBREVIATIONS: stitch (st), slip stitch (sl st), single crochet (sc), back loop only (BLO), front loop only (FLO), fasten off (F/O)

LEGS (Gray yarn; make two)

Rnd 1: 8 sc in a mr (8)

Rnd 2: sc inc around (16)

Rnd 3: (1 sc, 1 sc inc) rep around (24)

Rnd 4: working in BLO, sc even (24)

Rnds 5 – 6: working in both loops, sc even (24)

Rnd 7: (4 sc, 1 sc dec) rep around (20)

Row 12: flatten the arm and work through both layers, 5 sc (5); F/O and cut the yarn

TRUNK (gray yarn)

Rnd 1: 6 sc in a mr (6)

Rnd 2: (1 sc, 1 sc inc) rep around (9)

Rnds 3 – 5: sc even (9)

Rnd 10: 7 sc, 2 sc inc, 6 sc (17); F/O and cut the yarn. Stuff the trunk lightly.

Place a marker in st #5 and #14.

Ears (gray yarn; make two)

Rnd 1: 8 sc in a mr (8)

Let’s join the legs while crocheting the body…

Rnd 10: 11 sc, position the last row of one of the legs in line with the round of the body you are working on and crochet through both layer, 6 sc; keep working on the body only, 22 sc; do the same with the other leg, 6 sc, then work the remaining 11 sc on the body (56)

Rnd 11 – 14: sc even (56)

Rnd 15: (5 sc, 1 sc dec) rep around (48)

Rnd 16 – 17: sc even (48)

Rnd 18: (6 sc, 1 sc dec) rep around (42)

Rnds 19 – 20: sc even (42)

Rnd 21: (5 sc, 1 sc dec) rep around (36); start stuffing the body

Let’s now join the arms …

Rnd 22: sc even (36)

Rnd 23: 9 sc, position the last row of one of the arms in line with the round of the body you are working on, and crochet through both layers, 5 sc; keep working on the body only, 13 sc; do the same with the other arm, 5 sc, then work the remaining 4 sc on the body (36)

Rnd 25: (3 sc, 1 sc dec) rep around (24)

It’s time to join the trunk to the head. Place a marker in st #31 and #37 on the last worked round of the head.

Rnd 31: crochet 30 sc, then start crocheting on the trunk part working 1 sc into the marked st (#5), keep working on the trunk 9 sc (the last sc should be worked in the marked st #14), go back working on the head part, placing the hook into the st #38 (the one next to the marked one), work 1 sc into the same st, then 13 sc, 1 sc dec (56)

Rnd 32: 30 sc, 1 sc dec, 6 sc, 1 sc dec, 16 sc (54)

Rnd 33: sc even (54)

Rnd 34: (7 sc, 1 sc dec) rep around (48)

Rnd 35: sc even (48)

Rnd 36: (6 sc, 1 sc dec) rep around (42)

Use some extra strand of gray yarn to close the gap between the trunk and the head.

It’s time now to join the ears to the head.

Rnd 37: 12 sc, holding the ear so that you face the wrong side, position the last row of one of ears in line with the round of the head you are working on, and crochet through both layer, 4 sc, go back working on the head only, 22 sc, do the same with the other ear, 4 sc (42)

Rnd 38: (5 sc, 1 sc dec) rep around (36)

Insert the safety eyes between rnds #35-36, 9 sts apart.

Rnd 39 – 40: sc even (36)

Rnd 41: (4 sc, 1 sc dec) rep around (30)

Rnd 43: (1 sc, 1 sc dec) rep around (20); finish stuffing the head

Rnd 42: sc dec around (10)
