Octopus Free Crochet Pattern

YARN: Light (3) – Blue, White, Gray and Black

MATERIALS: 2.75 mm Hook

DIMENSION: 4” x 3”

ABBREVIATIONS: magic ring (mr), stitch (st), slip stitch (sl st), single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), back loop only (BLO), front loop only (FLO), fasten off (F/O)

SKILL LEVEL: Beginner

SEAMLESSLY COLOR CHANGE: work in the color A until two loops of the last stitch remain on the hook. Use the color B to complete the stitch.

HEAD (gray yarn)

Rnd 1: 8 sc in a mr (8)

Rnd 2: sc inc around (16)

Rnd 3: (1 sc, 1 sc inc) rep around (24)

Rnd 4: (2 sc, 1 sc inc) rep around (32)

Rnd 5: (3 sc, 1 sc inc) rep around (40)

EYES (white and scarlet yarn; make two)

Rnd 1: starting off with white yarn, 6 sc in a mr (6)

Rnd 2: 1 sc, 4 sc into the next st, 2 sc, 4 sc into the next st, 1 sc (12)

Rnd 3: 2 sc, 2 sc inc, 4 sc, 2 sc inc, 2 sc (16)

Rnd 4: switch to scarlet yarn, 3 sc, 2 sc inc, 6 sc, 2 sc inc, 3 sc (20)

F/O and leave a long strand of yarn to sew the eyes to the head, between rnds # 24-32.

Embroider the EYES with black cotton thread.

Embroider the V shaped MOUTH with black cotton thread, between rnds # 24-32.


TENTACLES (gray yarn)

Small – make 5

Rnd 1: 6 sc in a mr (6)

Rnd 2: sc even (6)

Rnd 3: (2 sc, 1 sc inc) rep twice (8)

Rnd 4 – 8: sc even (8)

Rnd 9: (3 sc, 1 sc inc) rep twice (10)

Rnd 10 – 15: sc even (10)

Rnd 16: (4 sc, 1 sc inc) rep twice (12)

Rnd 17: sc even (12); stuff the tentacle lightly

Rnd 18: flatten the tentacle and crochet through

both layers, 6 sc (6)

F/O and leave a long strand of yarn to sew the tentacle to the FLO of rnd # 33

Use the French Knot embroider technique to create the suckers with white yarn – insert the needle with the white yarn connected, wrap the thread around the needle two or three times. Gently pull the thread so that the wrapped thread is tightening against the needle. Insert the needle near the point where needle came out. Hold on to the thread wraps with your left hand and pull the needle to the back.

Sew the big tentacle on the front center part, then sew in this order 1 small, 1 medium, 3 small, 1 medium, 1 small.


MARKS (scarlet yarn)

Big Mark – make 1

Rnd 1: 6 sc (6)

Rnd 2: sc inc around (12); F/O leave a long strand of yarn.

Small Marks – make 2

Rnd 1: 6 sc (6); F/O leave a long strand of yarn.

Sew the marks to the top of the head.
