• Getting started…
Each horse uses the same pattern, but some techniques will be slightly different depending on which one you choose to make. We first start making the nose, which leads into the head. While doing this we leave an opening so we can form the neck from that opening. After forming the neck, it will lead into the body. Essentially the nose, head, neck, and body are one connected piece! After this we will make all of the other parts

Color Guide:

We have a few equines to choose from! Find which horse you’d like to make and follow it’s color guide. The color guide tells you what colors to use for each part of the pattern.

Horse:

Light Brown for Main Color (nose, head, neck, body, ears, and legs).
Dark Brown for hooves, hair, bridle, and saddle.

Zebra:

White for Main Color (head, neck, body, ears, tail, and legs).
Black for nose, hooves, hair, tail hair, and stripes.

Donkey:

Light Grey for Main Color (head, neck, body, ears, tail, and legs).
Dark Grey for hooves, hair, and tail hair.

Nose/Head:

Start in brown for horse. Start in light pink for donkey. Start in black for zebra

Round 1: 6 Sc into a Magic Ring (6)
Round 2: *Inc* all around (12)

We will now add 2 different colored eye stitch markers into Round 12. Add one eye stitch marker into 13th stitch and one in the 25th stitch.

Round 13: Change to grey for donkey. Change to white for zebra. Continue in brown for horse. Sc in the next 12 st. Repeat *Inc in the next st, Sc in the next st* 6 times. Sc in the next 12 st (42)

Now that the head is done, we will start forming the neck and body! Notice the hole that’s in the bottom of the head? That’s where we’ll attach our crochet hook and new yarn to start forming the neck.

Neck/Body:

Round 1: Place hook into the neck, where the stitch marker is. Pull main color yarn through. (Use brown for horse, white for zebra, and grey for donkey , Ch 1, Sc in the next st. Move stitch marker into the Ch 1 stitch you just made This will now mark the rounds for the neck. Sc in the next 8 st.

Now we will work on the other side of the neck. Turn to the opposite side , Sc in the next 11 st on the other side of the neck (20)

Now the neck is a full round! We will work around it for the following rounds, just like we did in Round 1 of the neck

Round 2-3: *Sc* all around (20)

This completes the neck! Now we will form the body, we’ll do this by making a chain at the back of the neck to form the length of the body. Let’s get started on the next page!

Leg Assembly:

Pin the legs as shown now. The short side of the leg will go towards the inside of the body. The long side of the leg will go towards the outside of the body. Pin on all 4 legs before sewing on, this will help you see if all of the legs look correct. If not, unpin whichever legs look wrong and repin them! Then, sew on. Stuff the leg very firmly before fully sewing on. Once finished sewing, tie the tail end of yarn into a firm knot. Bring the knot into the toy’s body to hide. Weave in ends and cut excess yarn.

Ears: (Make 2)

Start in Main Color

Round 1: 6 Sc into a Magic Ring (6)

Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Fold the ears slightly inward and pin onto the head as shown. (Ears should be about 13 stitches apart, pinned on Rounds 16-17) Sew on. Weave in ends.

Front Head Hair:

Use dark brown for horse. use dark grey for donkey. use black for zebra.

To make the hair we will cut a lot of pieces of yarn and tie them to the head. How long we do the strands will be different from the horse compared to the zebra and donkey.

For the front of the head hair, cut many pieces of roughly ~4″ yarn. Insert hook into a stitch between the two ears as show Fold a piece of the cut yarn in half Place this yarn on the hook , and pull only half of the yarn through

Tie the two pieces into a firm knot 2 times  Repeat this for a total of 8 stitches across one row! The hairs will be long. For the zebra/donkey, trim them shorter and straight across For a horse, keep the front head hairs longer, but trim the sides to be a little shorter. Swipe the horse’s head hairs to the front of his face

Neck Hair:

Use dark brown for horse. use dark grey for donkey. use black for zebra.

For the donkey and zebra, continue to cut 4″ pieces of yarn and attach them to the back of the head/neck area for 8 stitches across per row. Trim the yarn so it matches the front head of the hair length.

For the horse, cut pieces of yarn that’s about 10″ long. Attach this hair behind the shorter hairs. This will form the long mane! Attach the long hairs to the back of the head/neck area for 8 stitches across per row.

Add hair for about 8 rows total

Horse Tail:

In Dark Brown

Cut many pieces of 12″ yarn. Place hook into the upper back of the toy horse  Yarn over and pull through half of the yarn Tie the ends of yarn into a firm knot twice. Repeat this going a few times through the same stitch and a few times through nearby stitches to make a thick tail!

Zebra & Donkey Tail:

Start in Main Color

Row 1: Ch 17. Sc in the 2nd Ch from the hook. Sc in the next 15 st (16)
Row 2-3: Ch 1 & Turn. Sc in the next 16 st (16)
Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing on. Pin the tail to the upper back area of the toy as shown. Sew on and weave in ends.

Tail Hairs:

use dark grey for donkey
use black for zebra

Cut 4 pieces of yarn about 4″ in length. Just like we’ve done the previous hairs, attach the yarn to the end of the tail. Trim so the hair all matches the same length.

Saddle:

In Dark Brown

To make the saddle we will first make a chain. We will work entirely around the chain to form an oval!

Round 1: Ch 17. Skip the next 2 st, Dc in the 3rd stitch. Dc 2 more times into that same st. Dc in the next 13 st. Dc 3 times into the last ch. Now we meet the end of the chains Turn to OTHER side, where we haven’t worked any stitches yet Dc in the next 13 st (32)

Round 2: Dc 2 times into the next 3 stitch. Dc in the next 13 st. Dc 2 times into the next 3 st. Turn to other side. Dc into the next 13 st (38)
Round 3: Repeat *Dc 2 times in next st, Dc next st* 3 times. Dc in the next 13 st. Repeat *Dc 2 times in next st, Dc next st* 3 times. Dc in the next 13 st (44)
Round 4: Slst in the next 6 st. Ch 43. Skip the next 22 st. Sc in the next st.
Finish off, leave a tail for sewing. Place the saddle onto the horse as shown and sew on. Weave in ends.

Bridle:

in Dark Brown

Row 1: Ch 41. Connect the circle by making 1 Sc into the very first chain Ch 41.Skip the next 20 st on the circle. Sc in the 21st st. This completed the bridal!

You will have a smaller hole and a larger hole. Place the horse’s nose through the smaller one , the the larger one goes behind it’s head! You can sew this on if desired.

Zebra Stripes:

In Black

Insert hook into any stitch of the leg or body. This is where your stripes will start, so I recommend inserting your hook towards the back of the body! Yarn over with black yarn and pull it through the stitch.

Repeat *Insert your hook into any nearby stitch . Yarn over and pull the yarn through Yarn over again , and pull through both loops to complete one single crochet!

Do the steps mentioned in between the *stars* to form the stripes. To change direction of the stripe simply insert your hook into a stitch in the other direction!

Ch 70, turn, 2 hdc in each st all the way back. Cut off the yarn but be careful to leave a long
tail for sewing the tail onto the body.

Assembling
Head:
Sew the head onto the body. The head must point downwards a little. It can be helpful to pin
the head to the body first. Sew through the stitches of the body and then through the head.
And finally, stuff some extra fiberfill into the neck before closing it completely to avoid a
wobbly head. Weave in ends thoroughly.

Ears:
First, sew the pink piece onto each ear. Sew the ears on approx. 10 rows behind
the eyes and with 8-10 stitches in between. Weave in ends thoroughly.
Leg:
Place the legs under the tummy. They should point outward a bit.
Sew on the legs about 3 rows from the beginning of the body. Weave in ends thoroughly.

Arm:
Sew on the arms about 1 row from the top of the neck. Weave in ends thoroughly.

Mane:
Pin the four pieces of the mane to the head to make them stay where you want them. Then
stitch each end and the middle of the pieces onto the head. And if Ea is made for a very
small child, you may want to stitch the pieces in a couple more places. Weave in ends
thoroughly.

Tail:
Sew the four pieces onto the middle of the back side. Weave in ends thoroughly.

Secure your stitch and use the yarn ends of the legs to close the little gaps between the legs and belly with 1 or 2 stitches. Then weave in the yarn ends on the inside of the body.

Reinforce the legs with pipe cleaner or craft wire
I recommend watching this part of the video tutorial.
Now is a good time to insert pipe cleaner or craft wire in the legs. This is necessary in order for the legs to support the body.
If you are using pipe cleaner, I recommend taking it double and slightly twisting 2 pieces around each other for extra sturdiness.
Measure how long the pipe cleaner or craft wire needs to be by holding it against the horse’s/unicorn’s legs. You’ll need one double piece of pipe cleaner or one piece of craft wire for the forelegs and one for the hind legs. Add an extra inch on each side to shape a loop for each hoof.
If you are using craft wire, wrap the sharp wire ends and the loops with PVC tape.
Insert the pipe cleaner or craft wire in the legs. You may need to pull any yarn ends out of the way first, using your hook.

Insert the safety eyes and embroider the eyelids
For this part I also recommend watching the video tutorial.
Insert the safety eyes in between rnd 9 and 10 with about 5 stitches space in between. Don’t secure them just yet. If the safety caps are too large, embroidering the eyelids may be difficult after securing the safety eyes. If the safety caps are small, it may make sense to secure the eyes first.
Thread a piece of yarn on a yarn needle and stitch from the inside of the head out, at the outer corner of the eye. Stitch back inside the head at the inner corner of the eye. Move this stitch below the eye. This forms the lower eyelid. Stitch out of the head from the outer corner of the eye again and stitch back inside at the inner corner. Move this stitch above the eye. It shapes the upper eyelid.
Tie the yarn ends together inside the head and cut them short. Repeat on the other side.
Carefully secure the safety eyes, without the eyes covering the eyelids.
Fill the head with fiberfill. Continue crocheting the head.

Assembly

Sew the ears on between rnd 12 and 13 of the head with about 2 stitches space in between. Weave in the yarn ends.

Sew the horn on rnd 9 to 11, centered. Stitch the yarn end through to the back of the head and weave it in where it will be covered by the neck.

Fill the neck with fiberfill and sew the head on. The angle between head and neck is slightly wider than 90 degrees.

Now close the opening on the back and use the long yarn end to shape the body.

Attach the mane and tail
Cut 16 pieces of yarn for the tail, just over twice the length you would like it to be.

Attach the tail in 4 groups of 4 strands, close to each other, just above the butt. Pull 4 yarn strands through a stitch, picking them up at the center, using your hook. Then pull the ends through the loops and pull them tight.
Cut about 30 pieces of yarn for the mane, just over twice the length you would like it to be.
Attach the main in 15 groups of 2 strands, close to each other, along the top of the neck. Pull 2 yarn strands through a stitch, picking them up at the center, using your hook. Then pull the ends through the loops and pull them tight.
Trim the tail and mane to the desired length. You could also split the yarn for a different effect.

Your unicorn amigurumi is complete!

Attaching with thread vs. yarn tail
For a cleaner look, I opted to cut the yarn tails on the inner ears short and weave them into the back of the work, then attach the inner ears to the ears with matching thread. However, you can also attach them using a yarn needle and the yarn tail. It’s up to you!

Regarding stitch markers

Note: The photos above show a fox, but the technique is the same for all of my patterns.The pattern indicates to insert 4 different stitch markers in various places besides the one you use to track the beginning/end of each round.
I recommend using strands of yarn in 3 different colors as your stitch markers: Two strands in color 1 (blue) to mark where you will place each eye, Two strands color 2 (pink) to mark where you will start attaching each ear, and one long strand in color 3 (green) to track the beginning/end of each round.
The photos above demonstrate how to mark a stitch while crocheting a round: lay your strand of yarn acting as a marker over your working yarn and the stitch you’ll be working into, then complete the stitch as normal.You’ll essentially be weaving the long strand in color 3 through your work with each round. On odd rounds you’ll be laying the strand back-to-front, and on even rounds you’ll be laying the strand front-to-back.The advantage of using this technique is you’ll have the beginning of every single round marked, which makes it much easier to find your place if you make a mistake. That said, It’s perfectly fine to use a regular ol’ safety pin-like marker to keep track of your rounds instead. 

How to indent the eyes

Note: The video above shows a unicorn, but the technique is the same for all of my patterns.
Step 1 – Cut a strand of yarn approximately 18″ long. Tie a large, secure knot in one end and thread the other end through your yarn needle.
Step 2 – Insert your needle through the back opening of the head and sew between the two spots where you’ll be placing your safety eyes (marked with your color 1 stitch markers).
Step 3 – Pull your strand of yarn taut, which will create indents.
Step 4 – Fasten off with a knot and hide your yarn tail inside the head.

How to add hair for the mane and tail

Step 1 – Cut 10″ long strands of yarn. How many depends on your personal preference, but I ended up using well over 100. As you can see in the 4th photo above, I only rooted hair on every other round, but filled in the gaps with one strand of yarn on each side.I recommend finding a book or DVD case to wrap your yarn around several times, then cut along the top – it makes the process of cutting yarn strands much faster and it’s easier to produce a consistent length.
Optional: Use a ruler and a disappearing ink marker to draw a rectangle on the head as a guide for where to root the mane. You can do the same for the tail by tracing something circular (about 1.5″ in diameter) on the rear.
Step 2 – Fold a strand of yarn in half, insert your hook under a stitch in the head or body. Use your hook to catch your yarn strand and pull through a loop, then pull your tail ends of the strand through the loop.This video illustrates the technique perfectly, except I insert my hook front-to-back instead of side-to-side.
Step 3 – If giving your creation to a small child, be sure to secure each strand of hair with a knot so it can’t easily be pulled out.
